The Several Forms Of Community Mapping This brief was made in 1998-1999.
In my opinion policy briefs are so long, and I think they should make them more fun to read. This Brief #4 is easier to read. It has a lot of definitions so you understand what is going on.
With new technology, the possibility of mapping information about communities as a basis for decision making has captured the imagination of policy makers. This Brief is one of two that will explore the concept of community mapping. The first outlines geographic mapping; the second explores conceptual mapping.
Community Mapping -refer to a graphic “abstract” presentation of relationships within a specific geographic area, but without reference to a geographic grid.
As presented by John B. Kretzmann and John L. McKnight (1993), Community Asset Mapping is a capacity-focused way of redeveloping devastated communities. This positive approach is proposed as a substitute for the traditional deficits focus on a community’s needs and problems. Using problems to formulate human service interventions, the authors maintain, targets resources to service providers rather than residents, fragments efforts to provide solutions, places reliance on outside resources and outside experts, and leads to a maintenance and survival mentality rather than to community development.
The community assets approach starts with what is present in the community concentrates on the agenda-building and problem-solving capacity of the residents stresses local determination, investment, creativity, and control.
Cultural mapping- the documentation of cultural resources in the community.
This brief explores Community Asset Mapping, the use of mapping for youth development, and other forms of conceptual mapping.
"The term 'Community Mapping' is used conceptually to refer to a process of inventorying the resources or assets available to a specified neighborhood or community. This conceptual approach is identified as 'Community Asset Mapping'. It includes the identification of community assets for individual development and the inventorying of public capital and cultural resources." (Best Practice Briefs, 1998-1999)
This brief further discusses the concept and benefits of Community Asset Mapping. "As presented by John B. Kretzmann and John L. McKnight (1993), Community Asset Mapping is a capacity-focused way of redeveloping devastated communities. This positive approach is proposed as a substitute for the traditional deficits focus on a community's needs and problems." (Best Practice Briefs, 1998-1999) The authors propose that "using problems to formulate human service interventions targets resources to service providers rather than residents, fragments efforts to provide solutions, places reliance on outside resources and outside experts, and leads to a maintenance and survival mentality rather than to community development." (Best Practice Briefs, 1998-1999) Instead, Kretzmann and McKnight (1993) propose the use of community maps as a basis for the development of needed activities and policies. This, they believe, will promote the connections/relationships between individuals, individuals and organizations, and organizations and organizations. (Best Practice Briefs, 1998-1999)
Focus has also been placed on youth development. "The Search Institute's finding, that the number of risky behaviors is related inversely to the number of assets, has initiated efforts in numerous communities to consciously increase the adult connections and learning opportunities available to youth. Emphasis is on energizing parents, other adults, churches, civic organizations, etc. to change practices in a way that will create more caring support from adults, establish boundaries and expectations, and promote social competency skills, positive values, and identity." (Best Practice Briefs, 1998-1999)
Other forms of conceptual mapping include Mapping Public Capital, Cultural Mapping, and Community Relationship Mapping. (Best Practice Briefs, 1998-1999)
In my professional opinion, all of these ideas are very good. I believe that, if applied, these different approaches will definitely result in the improvements of communities and the lives of their residents. To agree with Kretzmann and McKnight, the strengths perspective should be used when thinking about community development. We should focus on the communities' strengths and make developments, rather than focusing on the problems. We should strive to find solutions. Also, in my opinion, the Search Institute's findings about youth development were very accurate. They successfully identified the major needs for adolescents.
Overall, this brief is very informative and provides excellent ideas for community development.
Best Practice Briefs. (1998-1999). Article found in the SOWK 445 Required Readings Handbook, 2010.
Best Practice Briefs #4 I too agree with Tiana, Policy briefs can be very complex and extremely long. Accordingly they are very informative and important. This policy brief discusses "mapping". Mapping is the step that many organizations, individuals, and administrator use to get a feel for something. While in the mapping stage, inventory is made about the resources, supplies, and funding needed for a particular idea or plan.
"Using problems to formulate human service interventions targets resources to service providers rather than residents, fragments efforts to provide solutions, places reliance on outside resources and outside experts, and leads to a maintenance and survival mentality rather than to community development." (Best Practice Briefs, 1998-1999)
The youth is a focus that many try to reach. According to my findings, many communities and organizations are encouraging more activities that children can participate in. Critics say that there is a lack of opportunity for children in many fa-sits of the world, this needs to be changed. I believe the addition to child/kid-friendly programs in communities is a brilliant idea. It will bring the community together as well as open up the eyes to many children who have never been exposed to these kinds of things.
This article focuses on several forms of community mapping. "Communtiy Mapping" is used to refer to a process of inventorying resources or assets available to a specified nieghboorhood or community ("Best Practice Briefs", 1998-1999). This particular approach is called "community asset mapping". It includes identification of community assets for individual development and the inventorying of public capitaland cultural resources. Then there is "community relationship mapping" which includes the visual presentations of relationships. Mapping is widely used for community, social and youth development ( Best Practice Briefs, 1998-1999). It is an appealing approach to building developemental aspects to avoid risky behavior.
This article focuses on community mapping and all of its many forms. What is community mapping and what is used for? Community Mapping "Community Mapping" is used to refer to a process of inventorying resources or assets available to a specified neighborhood or community ("Best Practice Briefs", 1998-1999). The article list other forms of community mapping such as community asset mapping, it includes identification of community assets for individual development and the inventorying of public capital and cultural resources. Community relationship mapping is when the visual presentations of relationships.
As stated in previous comments, most policy briefs are extemely long, filled with complicated language, and filled with a ton of information. Sometimes it can be a little difficult and very time consuming to try and decipher a policy brief that has been prepared by experienced brief writers. This article shares the technique of "mapping". Mapping is used to refer to a process of inventorying resources or assets available to a particular neighborhood, or community. ("Best Practice Briefs", 1998-1999). The article list forms of mapping. One type is community asset mapping which includes identifying a certain community and develping the individual and inventorying of public capital and cultural resources. I believe this is a great tool to have because it serves as a guide to create a policy brief. Creating a policy paper or brief is a big job and can take much research and time to create. In order to create a good policy brief, the writer must have a clear direction of who it is targeted for and what goal should be accomplished. Mapping will make this job easier to understand and complete.
"This article explores conceptual mapping of community assets, public capital, cultural resources, and relationships. The term community mapping is used conceptually to refer to a process of inventorying the resources or assets available to a specified neighborhood or community. This conceptual approach is identified as “Community Asset Mapping.” It includes the identification of community assets for individual development and the inventorying of public capital and cultural resources." This community mapping helps connect individuals with services that are provided in the community and assesses a need for services that may need to be provided to the community. The youth are also targeted to help and assist as a way to help them become involved and keep them out of trouble. Because of mapping, many individuals are able to receive the services that are needed to keep a community functioning as needed or to its best ability.
"The best practice briefs explains the mapping on data. Community Asset Mapping is used conceptional to refer to inventorying the resources or assets available to specified neighborhood or community. Community can also refer to a graphic "abstract" presentation of relationships within a specific geographic area, but without referance to a geographic grid. This visual presentation of relationships, generally known as ecomapping, is identified as Community Relationship Mapping." Community Youth Mapping uses a community resource survey as a mechanism for youth development, providing a small group of youth with employement and an opportunity to learn skills."(Best Practice Briefs)
This brief talks about community asset development, and exactly how to located and allocate resources for the community. Community development is used to analyze an area to figure out what opportunities are available within that neighborhood. The brief also talks about community mapping in relationship to individual development also. I found the brief to be quite interesting. It gives a detailed description of what a neighborhood as it relates to community planning. This brief also talks about how various policies are implemented into community asset development. The purpose of community development is promote a higher quality of life of individuals within that community. It promotes economic growth and pushes to decrease poverty levels within low income areas by bringing resources that are scarce to the area.Overall this was a very informative brief.
