  1. After-school Policy Brief 2: A fact sheet on children in youth in out-of-school time
*The importance of after school programs are just as essential as schooling itself. While some students go to school out of their own free will, others need a little bit of encouragement to do so. For these students, activities like sports teams and academic teams are their motivations. These opportunities allow children to express themselves and be active in a constructive manner. "Quality after-school programs improve school attendance, engagement in learning, test scores and grades. Research suggests that out-of-school time programs can benefit youth socially, emotionally and academically, however those who participate more frequently and for longer periods of time are most likely to benefit from out-of-school time opportunities." http://www.niost.org/pdf/factsheet2009.pdf. I firmly believe this. It is important for students to have an outlet other than school to express themselves. After school programs allow children to express themselves and show to others that they are capable of being a part of a team. Opportunities like these are great because they diversify the child and show them that there is more out in the world than they may have known before. I liked this article a lot. It was informative and precise.

  2. I totally agree that after school programs are just as important as schooling. From personal experience I can honestly say that if I didnt attend a after school program I dont think would be the person I am today. There has been a lot of research done that explained that that children with extra curricular activities dont get into as much trouble.A review of over 50 studies of afterschool programs
conducted by The Afterschool Alliance suggests: (1) quality afterschool programs improved school
attendance, engagement in learning, test scores, and grades; (2) frequency and duration of afterschool participation increases benefits; and (3) high-risk youth show the greatest benefits. After school programs affect people in many different ways, there are a lot of different things that the youth can benefit from. The youth needs extra activities. If these different after school programs were not their for the youth most of them would be getting into trouble that could have been prevented. It was said that the youth who attend the after schools have an advantage over other youths.

  3. This is a great article because it focuses on the affects of out of school programs. Results of research show that children who do attend these types of programs are more likely to attend school more frequently and do better in school all together. After school programs allow for students of high school age to help younger students and results show that the younger students gained a higher interest in subjects such as math and science. I believe this fact sheet is accurate because I have personally seen that after school programs and extra-curricular activities help a child become a well rounded individual.

  4. After school programs are very important to many youth. Its essentially important for some children to get a head in most studies. Afterschool programs improve school
attendance and test scores, and grades After school programs also give children who don’t have the opportunity to receive any help from parents or family additional help. Most after school programs also give children the opportunity to be involved any a various of activities such as sports and exercise. After school programs give many children the opportunity to broaden their horizons and learn new ideas. After school programs can be a major influence on the child whether the child participates in negative activities or productive activities. After school programs also build a good relationship between children and teachers. In my professional opinion, after school programs are very beneficial for all children that have a need for a sense of belonging.

  5. This was a great and favorite article. After school and out of school programs are extremely effective. Educatiom just does not have to be in the classroom with a teacher during certain hours all of the time. Education can be after school and most important at home. After school programs provides students with activities outside of the classroom. After school and out of school programs help students to improve and strength knowledge and skills. After school programs give students the opportunity to communicate and strengthen their social skills with other students. These programs can provide parent workshops and English-Language classes After school programs provide physical, dental and eye exams. Mental health counseling and teen parent programs can be provided in the programs. Students who are in after school programs are more likely to not participate in risky behavior. After school programs also broaden students in other areas of education such as arts and music. After school programs are great programs but also require more funding to continue its programs. Funding has to be set aside for trained after school workers high quality technical assistance, and program evaluations.

  6. I completely agree with this article. After-school programs are beneficial; they do help children. The article does a good job of presenting the need for after-school programs. The described benefits and ideas are very thorough. The research was well-done and very convincing. The inclusion of health and well-being considerations and considerations for children with special needs showed that the researchers have considered all aspects of after-school programs and children's needs. The discussions about funding and program quality were also excelent additions.

This research was well-done and I support the ideas presented. After-school programs provide children with positive extra-curricular activities, encouraging role models, and educational benefits. This is an issue that we all should get involved in. The future of our children is our future.

  8. This was a very interesting and needed article. This article discussed the usefulness and importance of after school programs, and what they mean to our youth. The results of the research that was conducted found that children who do attend these types of programs are more likely to attend school more frequently and do better in school all together. As a youth I was able to attend after school programs. I think that those programs allowed me the opportunity to learn many news things and materials, but it also helped to keep me from participating in other erroneous events. I think that after school programs are good for all age students, whether they are in the 1st or 12th grade, you can never be too or too young to participate in after school programs.

  9. I do agree that after school programs are beneficial and necessary in today's society. Education is one of the most important factors in a person's life and plays a significant role in development. After school programs serve as a safe haven for many youth who do not have both parents in the home, or if a parent works late and is not home after school to supervise the child. I myself have experienced after school programs and it was beneficial to my development as a young child. After school programs are usually educationally based, with adequate supervision. In this enviornment ( depending on the type of after school program) children are able to socialize with their peers, play sports, take up new hobbies, and be in a safe productive place until they are able to go home to parent supervision. After school programs serve as a great socializing tool because kids from different cultural backgrounds and ethnic groups are able to play and talk together. After school programs are educational and very productive.

  10. The first part of this article discusses the benefits for after school program participation. There was a study administered by the After School Alliance which showed that 1) after-school programs improved school attendance as well as academic performance 2) after school programs increase benefits and 3) high risk youth show the greatest benefit. Kids who are being productive outside of school are more likely to benefit socially, emotionally and academically. The article also speaks about the ongoing need for out-of-school time opportunities. As people mature and develop, they learn new skills, take on responsibilities and go through life changing experiences. These youth are more likely to succeed if they have been engaged in meaningful programs such as after-school programs.

The article goes on to speak about the different ways in which children spend their time after school. Some children participate in enrichment programs and other developmental and supportive activities. Students with special needs can also reap the benefits from after-school programs.
