  2. This handbook was very effective. The handbook gives positive and helpful tips on what steps to take when advocating. In social work it is important to advocate for clients but it is also important to know exactly what to do in order to get the message across. With the guidelines of advocating, organizations are able to make the public aware of issues, build relationships with policy makers, and amend policies. An advocate stands for those who cannot stand for themselves. It is important to have the tools and insights to make a change. With advocating, it is important to know who is in government positions and who can benefit the mission. It is important to gather information about the mission so that policy makers are able to understand the work of the program. Organization should unite with other organizations with the same mission. It is essential for organizations to have a goal of the issue, target, message, messengers, partners who share the same mission, tactics, and action to advocate. Writing letters is another useful way of advocating. Emailing is become a major useful tool in advocacy, however some individuals still prefer phone calls.

  3. This is a great handbook. It begins by defining "advocacy". It highlights the fact that anyone with a belief in a cause and a commitment to change can be an advocate, not just professionals or "experts". This handbook also discusses the relationship between non-profit organizations and politics.
The handbook lists the amount of money that "charities can spend on permitted political activities". It seems odd to me that the higher a charity's annual income, the less the charity is allowed to spend on advocacy. We should want our major charities to fight for social change. However, maybe this rule is to keep large charities from "ruling" politics. The handbook also gives the circumstances under which non-profit organizations can advocate in politics and the conditions they must adhere to. Next, the handbook lists and explains 6 things that one must do before he/she can start an advocacy campaign--1)Create a "Who's Who" List; 2)Compile Useful Data; 3)Build a Coalition; 4)Know the Players; 5)Understand the Process; and 6)Brief Your Board of Directors. All of this information is very useful to, not only social workers, but to all people working at non-profit organizations. This handbook explains their rights as advocates and will guide them through the process of advocating for a cause. By discussing the 7 steps to creating an effective legislative strategy, this handbook equips charity workers with the knowledge to become advocates in politics within set guidelines. The 7 steps answer very important questions--1)What is Our Goal; 2)Who is Our Target; 3)What is Our Message; 4)Who Are Our Messengers; 5)Who Are Our Partners; 6)What Are Our Tactics; and &)How Do We Implement. These questions will help charity workers organize their advocacy plan. This handbook may help them succeed as they strive to change social policy. Lastly, the handbook gives very useful tips on advocating via letter and e-mail. It is very important that advocates communicate with politicians in a professional, influential, competent, and assertive manner. This handbook will be very useful to all social workers, employees in the helping professions, and citizens.

  5. The art of advocacy is a handbook for nonprofit organizations. An advocate is someone who speaks up for others. The advocate may be an individual or an organization. Advocacy involves identifying, embracing and promoting a cause. Advocacy is an effect to shape public perception or to effect change that may or may not require legislation.

There are specific guidelines for registered charity advocacy. These guidelines determine how much an agency can spend on advocacy annually. Before starting an advocacy campaign there are six things that must be done. Create a "Who's Who" List, compile useful data, build coalition, know the players, and understand the process and brief board of directors. Next, there are seven steps to creating an effective legislative strategy. What is our goal?, Who is the target?, What is our message?, Who are our messengers?, Who are our partners?, What are our tactics?, and How do we implement? The last step is writing a letter or an email as an advocacy tool.

  6. This handbook is very informative. It gives detailed tips on what to do when dealing with advocacy in non-profit agencies. There are tips on things that should be done before starting an advocacy campaign such as creating a "Who's Who" list of all the governmental officials who are in positions of influence with regard to your program or mission, compile useful data by surveying your program participants for information about the impact of your programs, build a coalition, asking other organizations in the region that could be impacted by change, know the players by researching your legislators and learning their interests, understand the process, and brief your board of directors by discussing with the Board President of the possibility of establishing a public policy committee composed of board members who are interested in helping build your political capacity. There are also tips that lists what to think about when writing a letter as a way to easily communicate with elected officials. I think this handbook gives insight on what an advocate needs when trying to form a policy that would better help their clients. 8. I found this handbook to be a great source of knowledge, which spoke about effective ways to advocate. This book discusses the importance of social workers advocating for clients, and tips on how to do so. What is advocating, and who does it involve? To plead in favor of; to defend by argument, before a tribunal or the public; to support, vindicate, or recommend publicly. This involves the worker and the client. This handbook lists the dos and do nots in advocacy. The book uses terms that are commonly used, so there is no need to go and look up words, it was made for the average person to be able to digest, whether social worker or not. The author of this handbook did a great way of making available resources and other ways that you can advocate for clients.
