Clarification of Values
Purpose:
To reveal how prejudices and values influence decisions.
Procedure:
Assume the following story to be true.
Read the following scenario and follow the directions.
Scenario:
The Nuclear War
The United States has been involved in a nuclear war. Ten people find themselves in a shelter capable of supporting only six people for the year of necessary confinement. There are no other shelters which survived the attack.
Your problem is to evict 4 people so that the remaining 6 may survive. After you come to a decision, place a plus sign (+) in front of the names of those individuals the group has decided may live in the shelter and a zero (0) in front of the names of those the group has decided to evict. Be prepared to state why you either chose to keep or evict them.

I am keeping the book keeper because I would never wantto seperate a family, and his wife is pregnant and she is going to need some support from her husband.
2. His wife, six months pregnant +
I am not evicting he pregnant woman because she has another life in her and there is no where for her to go.
3. Black militant, second year medical student+
I am not evicting the medical student because he will be able to help to deiver the pregnant womans baby.
4. Famous historian, author, 42 years of age +
I am not evicting the historian because he is a famous historian artist and in a year when they are relased he will be able to maybe write them a book when there adventure is all over. After this experoence maybe the book will get them some money.
5. Hollywood starlet, single, dancer 0
I would evict the starlet because it seems as though she may have lived a good life. I think artist can survive on there own.
6. Biochemist 0
I am going to evict the biochemist because he is useless. He can't do anything for the survivors and he can survive on his own as well.
7. Rabbi, 54 years old +
I think that the rabbi can keep everyone sane.
8. Olympic athlete, all sports 0
I am evicting the athlete because I think that he would probably just eat all of the food and they dont ned anyone that big that will eat everything when the baby comes.
9. College student +
I am keeping the college student because he is probably smart and may have some type of savay. Being in college will help you with survival skills.
10. Policeman with gun (they cannot be separated) 0
I am going to evict the policeman because I feel like he would go crazy since he cant be seperated from his gun.
This was a hard decision I dont like that I have to kick out people. I wish I could have just made everyone eat small porportions and then everyone would have been able to stay.

as we try to determine if substances are
edible.

I chose to not keep the polic officer because sometimes they get a little power crazy and he may that assume because he is the one with the gun, that he can make the rules. These rules may not be the best for the group, so he's out of there and since he has a gun, he can survive on his own! The Biochemist, because he may go crazy one day from not being in contact with the outside world and he may try to build a bomb a kill everyone. The Hollywood Dancer gets evicted because I am not sure of what she could bring to the table. The famous Historian gets evicted because theres already a bookkeeper.
The only reason the bookkeeper stays is because his wife is pregant with a baby. The wife stays because of course she's pregnant. The medical student because he can help with medical needs just in case any may arise. The rabbi stays because there " are no atheist in fox holes", everyone needs a lttle prayer sometimes. The olympic athlete becuase he is probably strong and can help catch food and keep order. The college student stays because he has a future ahead of him...hopefully.

I would keep this person because it seems as though they have been around books for a long time. When being emerged in something for so long, it is impossible to not pick up on some handy skills. I reckon that this person has picked up a book or two in their life. Hopefully, they may have managed to pick up some survival skills in the books that they have been managing. I believe that they would be extremely resourceful and they certainly deserve to stick around.

I had to keep this women solemnly based on the fact that she was not only holding her life in her hands; she also had someone to live for. This women deserves to give her unborn baby a chance at life, the only way that she can do this is to stay alive herself. By evicting this women, her families life would crumble. Also, this women has a "hands up" at survival (more so than anyone else) because she has the two most important factors of her life there with her: her unborn baby and her husband. They will give her the boost that she needs to hold on to faith and chance and to let nature take its course.
3. Black militant, second year medical student(+)
I choose this person because they seems to be going places in there life. This person is obviously intelligent and has come a long way. It seems as though they have a lot to look forward to in their future, and should not be short changed with the cutting of their life.
4. Famous historian, author, 42 years of age(+)
I would have to keep this individual due to their life experiences. In a time like this you want people around you who are knowledgeable and skillful. Due to this person being a historian they probably experienced many situations like this (possible first hand). They will have the knowledge that one needs to survive in a setting like this. There wisdom, intelligence, and bravery will take them far. (On a side note) Also, in the event that they survive, I think that the writings that this person will discuss on there experience would be most interesting.

I would not choose this individual simply because I do not see how they would contribute within the group.

I would keep this individual because he seems to be very knowledgeable. In the event that the group would need to build something or know about something he would be the basis in which to ask. He can help with building certain objects as well as stating nifty ways to retain (possible) food and water due to his chemical background.
7. Rabbi, 54 years old(+)
I would keep this man for several different reasons. The first reason why I would keep this man is because he is a man of faith. In a dyer situation like this (I think), people will be looking toward some symbol of faith. This man can serves as a charitable man and keep everyone mind level headed while in this desperate time. Also, this person is the eldest of the bunch, I believe that they are wise and have (clearly) the most life experience out of all the survivors. I believe that this speaks volumes. Also, this person is rather old (compared to the others). I would not feel right allowing him to go off and survive on his own. I believe that he would be better within this group.

I would not pick this individuals because I do not see how they would contribute to the group.

****I had a hard time with this exercise due to one person. The hardest part was letting the athlete go. If I could have kept seven people instead of six I would have to choose the athlete hands down. I believe that his sports background will help him drastically. While playing sports (especially something as difficult as being an Olympian) one must be focused and determined. I believe that this mindset alone sets this person apart from all others. I believe that this person has survival instinct and will serve as a great motivator for the other team members. I believe that this person would survive with or without the group (note: this is the only person that I feel would serve by any means necessary. This is why I choose to let this person go). I think that this person would be more help to others than for themselves. Also, this person is (more than likely) the most fit person in the group. He can help build things and run errands that the other group members may be too weak to do.

I decided to keep him because he has a wife and a child on the way and these two are the only ones who I know can reproduce for certain.

I decided to keep the wife not only because she is pregnant but because I know she is capable of reproducing.

I decided to keep him because he could serve in some way of protection and or medical assistance. Especially since the bookeeper's wife will need help in delivery. Also others may need medical assistance.

I believe his has lived his life and I see no point in keeping hime besides the fact that he is a human being but because we must choose he has been evicted.
5. Hollywood starlet, single, dancer: 0
I also do not feel this individual should stay becasue I do not think a service can be provided by this person.
6. Biochemist: +
I chose this individual because great medicines could be developed whenever there is a time for them to go back into the world and start over.
7. Rabbi, 54 years old: 0
I think the Rabbi has lived his life and if he has been the man he has supposed to be he will surely be with God in the end.
8. Olympic athlete, all sports: 0
I dont think this individual could serve a purpose and has already accomplished so much in life.
9. College student: +
I think this individual still has so much life to live and should not be evicted.
10. Policeman with gun (they cannot be separated): +
I decided to keep the policeman for protection because he seems to be the only one with a weapon and since there was a nuclear blast there may be some wild mutated animals or something that everyone will need protection from.
This was difficult because who am I to judge who should live and die.

ReplyDeleteI would keep the book keeper because his family is already there. I would not want to separate a family. Although his profession is not useful in the shelter he should be there to support his wife and child.

I would keep the pregnant women because she has a new life inside of her and since everyone else appears to be gone this child would represent the beginning of life in a new world. This child will probably need others to have children so that they can continue the life cycle.

I would not keep the black militant because he is radical and may be too combative and aggressive with others. This may only cause chaos in such a small quarters. When people are trying to survive in a world that has been destroyed by nuclear war they are stressed. The last thing that they need is radical know it all to make things more stressful. Although he is a medical student he may be able to help people when they are sick and deliver the baby, I wouldn’t want him around.

I would keep the historian because he or she would know how people survived in previous times. This person would be helpful in knowing information about hunting, gathering, getting and preparing food and survival before there were civilized communities.

This would probably be the first person to go because a Hollywood dancer has nothing important to contribute to the shelter.

I would keep the biochemist because he would know when it would be safe to leave the shelter, how test the air, or the water, or anything that the other members of the shelter may need to use. He can make sure things are safe. He would probably knows what to do in case of a nuclear attack so he we be the most important person in aiding others.

I would not keep the rabbi because there is no more room for him. If I could keep a seventh person he could stay because I hat to throw an elderly person out on the street. He would be useful in prayer or wisdom but these people are old enough to have some type of belief and they can pray on their own.

I would college student because they could be useful in different ideas. Everyone else appears to be older and having youthful opinions and ideas could be helpful. The college student could be a social work student, or medical student but we don’t know since it is not specified. Whatever this student’s field is, it is better than the black militant.

I would keep the policeman because he represents authority. He would be useful in keeping order in the shelter.

I would not evict the bookkeeper because he is with his wife and they are expecting a child. They should be together for the sake of the child and the wife.

I would not evict her because she is pregnant and really needs her husband at this point.

I would keep the militant around because he has medical background and could possibly come into use.
4. Famous historian, author, 42 years of age
I would evict the historian however he may have the best insight for since this is happening during the war.
5. Hollywood starlet, single, dancer
I would evict the starlet because perhaps she could find other way to get out of the shelter.
6. Biochemist
I would keep the biochemist because this is happening during a nuclear war and he could provide help and solutions.
7. Rabbi, 54 years old
I would keep the rabbi because he could provide spiritual comfort but everyone may not believe in the same thing.
8. Olympic athlete, all sports
I would evict the athlete because he may have more abilities to survive because he is a athlete.
9. College student
I would probably evict this person because I just do not see how they would fit in.
10. Policeman with gun (they cannot be separated)
I would keep the policeman around because of safety.
Really I would not want to evict anyone.

I think that her offspring has more to offer the world than anyone else, including herself, but it will not survive without her.

This person will have a dual purpose, because he is trained in the armed forces and knows how to defend the shelter in case of an emergency, and he also can serve as a MD, because he is medical school, and just in case someone falls ill, he will know what to do to mend the illness.

He is so not detrimental to the success of the people in the shelter, if you want to stay in this shelter you have to be able to vital to its survival.

Entertainment would be a great thing to have in this time of need, but it is not a necessity.

I think that he will be able to assist the medical student with finding cures for certain illnesses.

I would keep the Rabbi because God will certainly need to be present in the shelter, and he will be the perfect candidate to do so.

I see no legitimate reason why this person should stay in the shelter.

I think a college staying would not do any good since we already have a medical student that we are keeping.

I decided to keep the policeman for protection as well as order, I think that he and the armed force/military student can work hand in hand to protect the people in the shelter
The decisions that I made were not difficult to make at all, in fact they would be a lot easier to make if the people that were not picked would realize the same thing, and make the decision to not come along.
