This was a great article to read. Many people think about the future of this country and what will the future hold. The article looks at the faith people have on the country concerning the future of their children once they approach adulthood. The article looks at the family background of family incomes and how it could affect future generations. A child’s future income could depend on their family income in past generations. The article points out that education could affect the gap of family incomes. However the education system is not fair to every child. Children from low income families tend to attend poor schools and children from wealthy income families tend to attend great schools. A college degree is very valuable to have today in this economy. However high school students from high income families are more likely to enroll in college than high school students from low income families. There are community colleges that give students from low income families a better chance to gain great skills and knowledge to move higher.
This is an interesting brief to read. "Research on teacher quality shows not only that students who have good teachers learn more but that their learning is cumulative if they have good teachers for several consecutive years. The major goal of educational reformers today should be to boost teacher quality. We outline a five-part plan by which school systems could achieve this goal. The plan includes rethinking entry requirements for teaching, implementing a strategy to identify effective teachers, promoting only effective teachers, giving bonuses to teachers who teach disadvantaged students or in fields that are difficult to staff, and promoting professional development linked directly to teachers’ work. As part of its reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act this year, Congress could consider funding large-scale demonstration and research programs by school systems to test plans for improving teacher quality". I agree with this introduction of the policy brief because the teachers are the ones that help children become who they wil be in the furture. Teachers have a passion to teach students and want to help them. Teachers donet understand how much power they have. I think this was an interesting read and would like to read more.
This article is very interesting, truthful, and informative. The author did an excellent job of presenting the problem(s)---social and economic inequalities. She compares the American social welfare system to that of Europe. She discusses the opportunities that are/are not provided to those with lower socioeconomic backgrounds. In discussing educational inequalities, the author presents the flaws of the "No Child Left Behind Act". She also discusses other inequalities at the primary, secondary, and higher educational levels. I like that the author proposed possible solutions to the issues that she raised. All Americans should consider these issues. We must think about our children. We must also think about who we are electing to political office (as the author discusses in the first few paragraphs of the article). She believes, as do I, that the underprivileged should elect leaders who will correct these issues/inequalities.
This article was well prepared and should motivate all of us to "Do Something".
This article gives you an in depth overview of how the skills, values, and knowledge installed in children at a young age, reflects their abilities once they get older and go out into the world. In order for us to have and sustain a productive future, we must invoke adequate knowledge into our children, even the ones who reside in urban/poor areas, in which we tend to look over in society. As the article points out, this means we need well-trained teachers who are adequate in technical subjects such as math and science. The article also speaks of poverty and the economy. The article introduces three factors that affect poverty. These factors include the economy, changes in family composition, and changes in government spending. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the government does not spend much money on social issues, such as poverty and welfare as they do on war and other non-important entities. Poverty in female headed- families is four to five times higher than that of married families. It is a proven yet interesting fact that if American children were living with their married parents, then poverty would decline. The article also speaks about the welfare system in American society and the inequalities that are present within the system.
The article Opportunity in America: The Role of Education. This article shows how important it is for children to get an education and funding to middle class have not increase. It also speaks about how the government have not contribute a generous amount of money to the social welfare as other countries. The article also talks about what opportunities really exist in America. It explains how America is supposed to be the land of opportunity but only certain classes have the chance to receive certain opportunities. The article explains how tax percentage should invest more in education and other society resources. The major purpose of this article it show how certain social issues need to be address in America.
I always find it interesting how the most needy individuals are always given the shortest end of the stick and expected not to prevail. Although some children come from poverty and may be exposed to this all of their lives, does not mean that it must stay that way. Children most definitely hold the key to success. I believe that children can grow up to be successful despite of all of the odds that may be counted towards them. Children hold the future to our Country and should be protected a lot more. Unfair schooling and unjust laws should be a thing of the past. I do believe that family background has an outlook on children but I do not believe that it should be the deciding factor in ones life. Once a child reaches adulthood, it is up to them to with hold new standards that they set for themselves. I do understand, however how past experiences depict future aspirations. We all need to empower each other as human beings and see our commonalities as opposed to shunning others for their differences. Great article, I like reading literature of this caliber: it makes me think of the possibilities.
Education plays a very important role in a person's individual development, socially and intellectually. It is no secret that most "urban" public schools do not compare to schools in well off area in the country. One thing that differs is the teaching and administrative staff. Teachers should be enthused, well educated, and doing their job well! However, I have witnessed first hand how this is not always the case. Students from lower income backgrounds sometimes struggle to deal with the pressures of home and school work, thus this creates dropout rates and poor grades. A college education is almost mandatory in our soceity and unfortunatley many urban kids are not given the same oportunity to experience it as others. This is a continual cycle that has to be broken, and I believe eduation can help solve this problem.
This article reviews the evidence on intergenerational mobility and the role of education in enabling less advantaged children to move up the economic ladder. When speaking of intergenerational mobility in the United States it is regarding the extent to which children's economic status when they reach adulthood is independent of that of their parents. A society with and abundant amount of opportunities offers children a decent chance to succeed regardless of the circumstances of their birth. The new volume of The Future of Children stresses that a variety of approaches to address deficiencies in each of the different levels of education, from preschool to higher education is something that can be done to improve educational opportunities in the United States. In conclusion strengthening opportunity requires greater and more effective, investments in education, especially for America's youngest children.
Sawhill, Isabel. The Future of Children: Opportunity in America: The Role of Education. 2006.
This policy brief talks the role of education in a child's life. The brief speaks on the current economic situation, and questions whether or not resources for our children or adults for that matter are still steadily flowing through our great land.It also speaks on children of the lower level of the economic spectrum and whether or not they are afforded the same opportunities as the middle or upper class. The fact of the matter is that due to the current economic crisis, those who are poor are staying poor , and those who were not are becoming poor for a variety of reasons. It discusses the differences between the rich and the poor , and how they are perceived by society. Are people poor because they want to be , or are they choose to be? Are the ones who are wealthy successful because they are apart of a certain super breed of human beings? Is everyone not afforded the same opportunities in America , and only some know exactly what to do with them? These are questions that are posed within the brief, along with the topic inequality.Overall this was a very informative brief , and I enjoyed reading it.
